-Wrapping him in trash bags, they sneak out, hauling the body.

-They are intercepted by a group of Brothers, who have been following them around and keeping an eye out for them. They are true believers. They kneel down before them. They take the body.

-The teacher is among them, saying he hadn't been sure of their identity. When they tell him what they are trying to figure out, he offers to help them with research.

-Palomino and Chance seem to be making up, but they aren't making any plans for the future.

-The mean Weem twins are still making snide comments. Azazel tells them off.

-That evening, the teacher tells them:

-The Rising Sun prophecies come to light in the early part of the 20th century, primarily because of the Weems. The prophecies became increasingly concerned with a PERSON.

-Weem creates a task force to seek out The Rising Sun in the late 80s, because he believes he has been born or is about to be born.

-Walking back to their dorm, Jason and Azazel discuss the ramifications of this. What the hell?

-When Azazel gets back to her room, the mean Weem twins come find her. They want to be friends now. They show her their rooms, which have belonged to the Weem family for generations. There is a secret passageway down into the depths of the school.

-Together they find stuff about Weem and Michaela, namely that Michaela was a student at the school and that Weem was a teacher. Michaela's father, then, is a member of the Sons. They find Michaela's journals--hidden from Weem.

-Azazel shows this to Jason. The journals indicate that Weem has told Michaela their next move will be to go to Kildare, Ireland. Jason and Azazel decide to go.

-In a hotel on their way there, they have sex. Azazel has an orgasm.

-In Kildare, they are intercepted by Weem. "I knew the girls would show you the journal. They're good girls."

-Weem created Jason to destroy the Sons, not to rule the world. Banks, etc. Weem begs them to lead an attack on the Sons headquarters, claiming the Sons are an evil blight on the world. They argue with him, wanting to know why he used so many rituals, etc, in creating Jason.

-They aren't convinced as they head back to school. They still think that they may be evil and destructive and that Weem is trying to manipulate them.

-They go to the teacher, who explains to them that the Rising Sun was always a hotly contested idea--some saw it as metaphorical, some saw it as a person, some saw it as a change in attitudes, etc.

-Still confused, they head back to their dorms, where Chance tells them that Grandma Hoyt is coming because he and Palomino spilled the beans about her pregnancy.

-Panicked, Jason and Azazel try to hide, but they don't have time, because Grandma Hoyt is there.

-However, she talks to them and tells them that The Age of Aquarius, Pluto in Capricorn, the Mayan calendar, etc all point towards a change in the world--a rebirth. Jason and Azazel are instruments of it. Whether they are good or evil is up to them. -Why did Grandma Hoyt help Gordon and Noah?

-The Weem twins rush in, unconsolable, because Uncle Edgar is dead.

-And members of the Sons come in through the windows, shooting Grandma Hoyt and preparing to open fire on the others.

  -Jason yells out, "Stop!"

-Everyone freezes. Jason and Azazel take hands. The Sons drop their guns and stare up at Jason adoringly. They fall to their knees.

-With the help of the teacher, Jason and Azazel take over the school.

-Every day, more and more Brothers show up.

-Jason and Azazel are on the fence. They don't want to create any more violence.

-But then Hallam shows up, and he brings with him Anton, who tells him that Weem set up the whole death thing, to push Jason over the edge.

-Anton assures Jason that he is not evil.

-Finally, they decide to go to the Council, taking with them an army of Brothers--the Knights of Reddimus

-There is a skirmish getting into the building.

-But once the members of the Council see them, they all start spontaneously committing suicide.

-epilogue shows them in the Hoyt household, raising Palomino's baby and starting college.

  Outline 2

(the book follows this outline for the first part)

-Palomino is pregnant. Azazel attempts to console her

-Azazel has a nightmare--Jason, violence, pregnancy. She wakes up and drinks liquor. She also has a gun.

-The next day, Jason wants to know what is up with Palomino--she hasn't told Chance. Interrupted in class because of teacher, etc.

-Later, Weem sisters make nasty comments about Pal, Az.

-Flash back: the Order of Reddimus is an offshoot of the Sons.

-Jason and Azazel sneak out to try to case out the library. No dice. Jason tries to bring up orgasm thing. Azazel doesn't want to talk about it or to make out. On the way back, they get the distinct impression someone is following/watching them.

-Azazel tries to convince Palomino that she has to tell Chance what's going on. Palomino doesn't want to. Azazel suggests an abortion. Palomino vehemently disagrees.

-Azazel has a dream--rape nightmare, including an orgasm

-When Azazel wakes up the next morning, she decides she needs a drink to make it through the day.

-Weem sisters and their boyfriends razz Palomino. Jason gets pissed and starts to punch them. Luckily, they aren't discovered. Azazel, who has been drinking on and off all day, explodes to Jason that Pal is pregnant.

-Jason conspires to get Pal and Chance together to clear the air. They leave the two of them alone and go off alone. After a discussion about sex, etc, they start to kiss. The prom! Az breaks off. Jason gets frustrated. They argue. He does something that scares Azazel. Walking back, she again feels like someone is watching/following her.

-Azazel drinks more. She dreams about Jason's violence, about her violence. Upon waking, she is concerned. The drinking is no longer drowning out the dreams.

-After class, she talks to Chance, who is beside himself. He has no idea what to do. Azazel, who is half-drunk, doesn't know what to say to him.

-After her next class, one of the professors questions her about the Rising Sun. Azazel is freaked by this, but also drunk, so she asks him some questions about the nature of the Rising Sun--is he evil?

-Azazel remembers things Sutherland said to her and thinks about the idea that the Rising Sun has a dark consort. Things that Michaela said. She is confused and upset.

-When she gets back to her dorm room, Jude is there. He's talking with Palomino.

-Azazel is angry and she wants to kill Jude. Threatens to, in fact. Might have done it, if it weren't for Palomino.

-Instead, she arranges for a meeting with Jason, where they talk to Jude. Jude tells them that he has a message for them from Weem. He tells them about the fact that the Rising Sun prophecies were pushed by the Weem family. He tells them that they need to get into the Weem family suite--where the bitchy Weem sisters live.

-Jason and Azazel talk in very matter-of-fact terms about killing Jude. They decide to tie him up and keep him in the basement of Jason's dorm--security in boys' dorms considerably laxer than girls'. For now, anyway.

-Pal has money from her mom to buy a prom dress. She and Azazel go to the store to try to buy dresses, but it's weird. Azazel talks to Pal about the need for Pal to see a doctor if she's going to keep this baby.

-They come back when Az gets an angry text from Jason.

-Joining him in the basement, she discovers that Jude is dead. They both accuse the other of doing it. They argue. Jason points out that Az is drunk all the time and that she doesn't know what she is doing.

-Exhausted and unresolved, they realize they have to do something about Jude's body.

(And here, the book stops following this outline)

-Wrapping him in trash bags, they sneak out, hauling the body.

-They are intercepted by a group of Brothers, who have been following them aro
und and keeping an eye out for them. They are true believers. They kneel down before them. They take the body.

-The teacher (from before) is among them, saying he hadn't been sure of their identity. When they tell him what they are trying to figure out, he offers to help them with research.

-With the help of the Brothers, they break into the library and find out some info on why the Sons left, how they left, and the Knights of Reddimus

-But this doesn't really help. Azazel remembers something that Jude said, about the Weem sisters.

-Gritting her teeth, Azazel makes nice with the sisters, asking if she can see their suite. Once inside, they show her a secret room. "Uncle Edgar told us to give this to you." It is Michaela's journal.

-Azazel shows this to Jason. The journals indicate that Weem has told Michaela their next move will be to go to Kildare, Ireland. Jason and Azazel decide to go, even though it means that they will miss the prom, which is upsetting to Jason.

-When Azazel mentions Kildare to Pal, who says, "My sister lives in Kildare." That's it. They're taking Pal and Chase and going to Kildare.

-In a hotel on the way there, Jason and Azazel have sex. Azazel doesn't come, and tearfully, she admits that it's because she isn't sure that she deserves to.

--In Kildare, they are intercepted by Weem.

-They go to the teacher, who explains to them that the Rising Sun was always a hotly contested idea--some saw it as metaphorical, some saw it as a person, some saw it as a change in attitudes, etc. He warns them, however, that their absence has caused issues, and isn't sure, but he thinks the Sons may know about Jason and Azazel

-Still confused, they head back to their dorms, where they are met by Grandma Hoyt because they were missing.

-She talks to them and tells them that The Age of Aquarius, Pluto in Capricorn, the Mayan calendar, etc all point towards a change in the world--a rebirth. Jason and Azazel are instruments of it. Whether they are good or evil is up to them. -Why did Grandma Hoyt help Gordon and Noah?-She tells them she's not exactly in good with the Sons these days...

  Outline 3

  (begun midway through the book)

  Okay, so what if...

-everyone in school starts sucking up to J&A. The Brothers are running around, doing weird things like bringing them cokes and food or offering to do their homework or escort them places.

-Moretti kicks out the principal and head. Suspends classes. The Brothers roam the school, carrying guns, not letting the students out. He announces that there will be a formal ball in Jason and Azazel's honor coinciding with the day of the prom.

-Student response is varied, but most are really, really into J&A, and follow them around like puppy dogs. It's creepy.

-J&A get a private room. They get room service. They have meetings with Moretti about strategy. He wants them to make a move on the Sons and basically go to war.

-The good news is that they've got the run of the library at this point, and Azazel manages to find some information on the Knights of Reddimus and why the Sons left the Church. She also finds Michaela's journal in the Weem sisters' suite, but she doesn't read it yet.

-Jason makes them have prom, and then they stage their escape, taking Pal and Chance along.

-Don't know how they get out of prom yet, but there should be a fire fight.

-Azazel reads the journal on the plane with a growing sense of horror.

  Kay

So, safely away and back in the U.S., they take refuge with Marlena. Unfortunately, Sutherland shows up and kills Marlena and takes them to Weem. Sutherland's like, "Money talks. And Weem and I may actually be on the same side."

-Weem's like, "Get back there and stop the Sons. Scalar magnetics and the whole she-bang!!"

-To which they're like, "Fuck that" and Azazel and Jason kill Weem—without guns. They don't believe him. They figure he's just trying to manipulate them. They're sick of everything.

-They decide to drop off Chance and Pal with Grandma Hoyt, for their own safety.

-Grandma Hoyt makes them stay and talks to them about how it's their choice what happens, blah, blah, blah.

-But, of course, they've stayed too long, and the Sons have tracked them down. They kill Grandma Hoyt.

-"Stop," Jason says, grabbing Azazel's hand, and all the Sons drop to their knees.

  Outline 4

during which I'm clearly frustrated—hence the italics)

Everyone starts being nice to J&A, including teachers.

-faruza and fairie help az sneak into the library,

Jude has to have had the journal.

-teachers turn a blind eye to a fight Jason gets in

-and the body of jude has disappeared

Prom happens. J&A get crowned prom king and queen. Which would be weird enough, if it weren’t for the fact that during their dance, the brothers all come in and kneel down. And everyone in the entire place kneels down.

So J&A leave. Because they’re freaked out perhaps they also know the sons are coming to get them and even though the brothers want to protect them and everybody’s like, “We’ll die for you,” they don’t want to do that… ??? They go back to brother mancini, who won’t let them stay.

In a hotel room, after more unsatisfying sex, az studies the journal. They decide to retrace edgar weem’s steps, to figure out what is going on.

Weem goes first to the coliseum, where he and M made love in the moonlight, uttering latin spells invoking Apollo (find Roman name).

Nothing there. They don’t even go.

Weem then sought the help of a man in Venice, who chanted bunches of weird spells over them. He is a member of the sons, but not a brother. Oh, and animals blood and eating flesh and grodiness.

J&A go there. This guy tells them that he is consecrated to Mars, and that his job was to bless Weem’s union with a spirit of warlike power and junk. He will tell them that weem was very concerned with the Sons desire for money and power, and that he saw the birth of the Rising Sun as an end to the Sons rule, not something to cement it. He believed he was conceiving a powerful warrior.

Do the crazy council members swarm them?

Next they go to a woman in Tuscany in an old villa or something, who helped weem and Michaela summon some sort of weird power, connected to witchcraft or something—think hecate, etc.

The woman tells them that they are sign of the coming ch
ange—age of aquarius, Pluto in Capricorn, and 2012. she says that they are quite powerful, and that they must trust both themselves and their power. “Within you, I see good intentions. Cling to each other. Cling to humanity.”

After this point in the diary, weem begins to behave erratically towards Michaela, becoming crueler and wielding more power. He is now more and more all about crafting this, rather than summoning it.

So, then, they’re astonished when the next person they go to is Arabella Hoyt. J&A take a plane to New Jersey and go to see Azazel’s grandmother. After a show of being glad to see them, she promptly locks Jason away somewhere and has a talk with azazel. Apparently, she planted ideas in Michaela Weem’s mind via hypnotism, because she knew what her husband wanted and she knew that the coming of Jason could ruin the Sons. It was the best she could do. She couldn’t come out against weem because he was blackmailing her because she was cheating on her husband. If he found out, he would have divorced her. Furthermore weem uses her to summon and officiate a gypsy blessing on the child, which she didn’t do. Instead, she cursed Jason—cursed him to descend deeper into darkness as the power inside him (already bestowed) grew. “Soon he won’t even be human.”

In the end, she has been working all along to get rid of Jason. Michaela, however, arabella believes, became far too creative in trying to kill Jason. Arabella was not amused when she used her own daughter to bear the ‘vessel.’

Furthermore, she knows about mina and chance. Mina has been taken by the sons, “for her own good” where they can only assume she’ll be forced to give the baby up.

She speaks to chance on the phone to assure him she’s going to try to get help for Jason and mina. Chance wants to come, but she says absolutely not. Too dangerous. And besides, she’s not keen on losing anymore of her family.

Not good at all. Arabella turns Jason over to the Sons, and Azazel fights her way out of arabella’s house. She finds Sutherland through phone call to father Gerald. She wants Sutherland to help her find Weem. Sutherland wants to trade. Azazel holds a gun to his head and demands he tell her where Weem is. Sutherland does so, and is impressed with A’s new resolve.

A then goes to marlena, and gets her to get her a credit card so she can buy airline tickets to Kildare, Ireland. When marlena figures out what’s going on, she comes along.
